We offer surgical abortion as a day treatment in Hospital.
The surgical abortion procedure we use is Vacuum aspiration.
This would involve an ultrasound scan to ensure that you are in the right stage of pregnancy for a surgical abortion. We would also be discussing your medical history and taking you through the process in detail.
If you are under 13 weeks of pregnancy, Vacuum or suction aspiration would be the preferred method. The procedure involves insertion of a small tube into the womb and the removal of the pregnancy by gentle suction.
To make suction easier you will be given a tablet before the treatment. This is a very quick and simple 5 - 10 minute procedure. If you are under 10 weeks pregnant, anaesthetic will not be needed.
Some bleeding and cramping can be expected which may last for 1-2 weeks. So plan ahead to make your recovery time more comfortable.
As the womb returns to its normal size following the procedure, cramping pains are normal. Have maxi pads ready, and a heating pad for cramps, in case you need it.
We will also advise you about pain relief, symptoms to watch out for and help you with follow-up appointments.
