After a medical abortion, most women experience heavy bleeding and large clots, as the body expels the pregnancy tissue. It’s also normal to have crampy pains during this time. Once the pregnancy passes, the amount of bleeding usually reduces. This would be followed by light bleeding for about two weeks, but you may have spotting up to your next period. Pregnancy symptoms like nausea will start to settle after a couple of days.
Women who have undergone an abortion experience pretty severe cramping on and off during the procedure and upto 2 weeks after. At the clinic, we would advise you about taking pain relief medication such as paracetamol, codeine, or ibuprofen. We strongly discourage the use of aspirin for pain relief as it can increase bleeding.
