What would be my recovery process?

It is always good to know what happens to your body after undergoing an abortion, so that you know what to expect.

After a medical abortion, most women experience heavy bleeding and large clots, as the body expels the pregnancy tissue. It’s also normal to have crampy pains during this time. Once the pregnancy passes, the amount of bleeding usually reduces. This would be followed by light bleeding for about two weeks, but you may have spotting up to your next period. Pregnancy symptoms like nausea will start to settle after a couple of days.

Cramps are the common symptoms of abortion and can occur occasionally.

Women who have undergone an abortion experience pretty severe cramping on and off during the procedure and upto 2 weeks after. At the clinic, we would advise you about taking pain relief medication such as paracetamol, codeine, or ibuprofen. We strongly discourage the use of aspirin for pain relief as it can increase bleeding.

Here are some handy tips to help alleviate the pain:

  • Apply a heat pad or (warm) hot water bottle wrapped in a towel or blanket to your lower abdomen.
  • Wear comfy, loose clothing.
  • Ensure you are comfortable and relaxed at home.

If you are worried about the intensity and duration of your pain, do not hesitate to reach out to us any time on 0743 444 1 444.
